Every year World Breastfeeding week is celebrated from August 1st to 7th with an aim to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of the babies across the globe. As per the UNICEF report, about 60% of the world’s total infants are missing out of recommended six months of exclusive breastfeeding.
Breast milk is the wholesome food for the baby. Breastfeeding is a natural process of nursing the baby. The baby should be breast fed in the first hour after the birth which is also known as the golden hour.
OBJECTIVES OF THE THEME
• To aware parents about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months as it is beneficial for both mother and the child.
• To educate parents that breastfeeding is an important source of energy and nutrients in children aged between 6-23 months.
IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING WEEK
ACCORDING TO WHO
• Every Newborn baby has the right to good nutrition according to the convention on the rights of the child.
• Breastfeeding reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart in the mother.
• It prevents infection like early-stage diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections.
• It reduces infant mortality rate.
Breastfeeding week celebration was organized by the II-year GNM students of Metro College of Nursing, Greater Noida U.P, India, from 1st to 6th of August 2022, under the guidance of Prof. Pravin Prakash P, Principal, Metro College of Nursing, Greater Noida.
VARIOUS ACTIVITIES WERE PLANNED AND CONDUCTED IN THE ENTIRE WEEK.
DAY 1: Pre-test was conducted on knowledge of fathers regarding KMC and breastfeeding in CHC Bisrakh and Shafipur village, Greater Noida, Gautam Buddha Nagar District, U.P, India
Pre-test on knowledge regarding KMC and breast feeding in CHC Bisrakh and Shafipur was organised on 1/8/22. Students were divided into two halves respectively.
DAY 2: An awareness programme on knowledge regarding KMC and breastfeeding was organized at CHC BISRAKH.
INTRODUCTION AND AWARENESS REGARDING BREASTFEEDING AND KMC
To galvanize support and to sensitize on breastfeeding Metro College of Nursing Greater Noida, Gautam Buddha Nagar District, U.P, India, conducted an awareness programme on breastfeeding at CHC BISRAKH, Gautam Buddha Nagar District, U.P, India on 2/8/22 between 10:30 AM to 2 PM. The programme was hosted by Mr. Sachiender Mishra, Medical Superintendent CHC BISRAKH and GNM II-year students of Metro College of Nursing along with Mrs. Jaunita John Barren, Ms, Bharti Singh, Ms. Garima Rohilla and Ms. Sandhya Kumari.
Mrs. Jaunita John Barren, HOD department of Child Health Nursing gave a brief introduction regarding the importance and benefits of breastfeeding,various positions and attachment while feeding followed by the introduction and the elaboration of the theme for breastfeeding week, 2022 and a role play depicting the same was been organised by GNMII-year student.

DAY 3: An awareness programme on knowledge regarding KMC and breastfeeding was organized at SHAFIPUR VILLAGE.
INTRODUCTION AND AWARENESS REGARDING BREASTFEEDING
To educate people residing in rural area an awareness programme on breastfeeding and KMC was organised by Metro College of Nursing Greater Noida U.P at SHAFIPUR VILLAGE on 3/8/22 between 10:00 AM to 12 PM. The programme was hosted by the Pradhan (the head/President of the village) of the village and GNM II-year students of Metro College of Nursing along with Mrs. Shivani Rai Sharma, Mrs. Jaunita John Barren, Ms. Rakhi and Ms. Shalini.
Mrs. Shivani Rai Sharma, Associate Professor department of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Nursing addressed the gathering at the village and had even briefed them about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding, positions to be maintained while feeding a child followed by the introduction and the elaboration of the role play which was been organised by students of GNM II-year.

DAY 4: Post-test was conducted on knowledge of fathers regarding KMC and breastfeeding in CHC Bisrakh and Shafipur village
Post-test on knowledge regarding KMC and breast feeding was conducted at CHC Bisrakh and Shafipur on 4/8/22. Students were divided into two halves for Shafipur and CHC Bisrakh. After taking the post-test pamphlets containing the information regarding breast feeding and KMC were distributed to the attendees. According to their scores there was a little improvement which was found at both the groups as per the evaluation.
DAY 5 and Day 6: Training on KMC and Breast feeding for GNM II-year students inside the college premises.
Training of the students was organised by the Departments of Child Health Nursing, Obstetrical and Gynaecological Nursing and Community Health Nursing for the students under the sincere guidance of Prof. Pravin Prakash P, Principal Metro College of Nursing. The day started with Principal’s address at GNM II-year class room. Sir briefed them regarding the day followed by the importance of the training for them. They were divided into six groups and in four stations which were Station I as the expressed breast milk, station II as hygiene, breast self-examination and latching, station III was about KMC positioning and station IV was regarding the manual preparation of KMC bag.
Students were given demonstration regarding all the IV stations and thereby return demonstration was taken by them.

CONCLUSION AND CLOSING CEREMONY OF BREASTFEEDING WEEK CELEBRATION
Closing ceremony and conclusion of the event was done by Mr. Muzaffar Makrani Vice Principal, MCN by emphasizing on the breast feeding and the rights of every child to get breast milk immediately after birth and the responsibility of not only the mother but also the other family members to provide exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continued breastfeeding along with complementary feeding for 2 years.
